Gamerscore is the running total of points from every achievement you have unlocked on Xbox. It never goes down, and it is shown on your profile card, which is why many players treat it as a measure of how much they have played.
How gamerscore is earned
Each game ships with a list of achievements, and each achievement is worth a set number of points. Unlock it and those points are added to your gamerscore permanently. DLC often adds more achievements and more points.
Raising gamerscore yourself
